Predicting Free Speech?
I was browsing the paranormal news when I came across this article from the Portland Skepticism Examiner. In it, author Charles McAlpin talks about a recent case in Maryland involving fortune telling. Basically, Nick Nefedro claims to be able to tell the future and wants to open a business where he gives readings. The problem? Doing so is illegal in Maryland. He’s decided to go to the courts on a ‘free speech’ defense to get a business license. The author thinks this isn’t a free speech issue. Whether or not you agree with him, it does seem to be a bit of a complicated issue and makes for an interesting read.
What do you think of this? Should telling fortunes be protected as free speech or should people who say they can do so be forced to prove it before being allowed to open a business? Let me know what you think.
